Hi, I'm Shwetank Dixit. I have 17+ years of experience in tech. I have worked on browsers, accessibility, web standards, extensions, mobile apps and much more. Along the way, I've had the privilege to work with and learn from some of the smartest and kindest humans in the industry, all around the world.
For the first 8 years of my career, though, things were mostly stagnant. Don't get me wrong - I absolutely learned a lot, had fun while doing it, and developed amazing technical skills (and certain soft skills), but I did not really take career growth seriously.
However, there came a point where I seriously thought about my career advancement and decided to be more intentional about it. Since then, I grew quickly through the ranks, eventually becoming VP at eyeo GmbH and leading its Core Technology business unit.
But the path along the way wasn't easy. Every jump in position was marked by intense imposter syndrome, and a lack of support in terms of how to manage people well. Often, many of us are just expected to know how to lead and manage people, when in reality it is very complex.
This is because people are complex. Managers and leaders are often put in emotionally charged situations, and the higher up you go, the less you are shielded from them. You often have to manage yourself well before you manage others, and you have to work on a whole host of new skills that you didn't expect.
You realize that what got you here won't get you there. You'll get to the next level by developing new skills. These are the critical soft skills needed for effective leadership.
